The “Judo Union of Asia Cadets & Junior Judo Championship”, hosted by the Macau Judo Association and undertaken by the Macao Sports Bureau, took place from 29 to 30 July at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion. The competitions of the juvenile group and the youth group were held throughout the two days. As the home team, the Macao judo team sent 10 male and 13 female athletes to compete, and achieved the result of 1 gold, 2 silvers and 11 bronzes.
The championship this year attracted over 150 athletes from ten countries and regions including Japan, Korea and Chinese Taipei. Atheletes competed for the world ranking and world highest scores so as to be qualified to participate in events like the Asian Games and the Youth Olympic Games.
The only gold medal awarded to the Macao team was gained by Lei Cheng I, who defeated a Korean contestant in the 44 kg class of the women's youth category. She also ranked the fifth in the Asian Youth Championship and won a gold medal in the competition hosted in Hong Kong. She performed vigorously when competing against the Korean contestant for the first time. Eventually she defeated her opponent and got an “ippon” victory, awarding the home team a gold medal. After the match, she said, “Before the fight I got hurt in my ankle, but I put up with the pain and still used my feet-based skills to attack my opponent. I think that I made some progress through the recent intensive training”.
