The Terrific 12: Day 1 - Guangzhou Triumphs Chiba

The first day of The Terrific 12, held by Sports Bureau of Macao SAR Government and Asia League, saw close match ups on the court.

A snapshot of today’s action is below:

The Yulon Luxgen Dinos and the Nagoya Diamond Dolphins opened up Asia League's The Terrific 12 premier basketball tournament at the Studio City Event Center in Macao. The Diamond Dolphins were led by big performances from Markeith Cummings pouring in 30 Points and grabbing 9 rebounds as well as fellow import Craig Brackins with an equally impressive double-double. Brackins made his presence known throughout the game contributing 28 points and 10 boards. The Dolphins controlled the game inside and out, hitting 7 threes in total, 5 coming from Brackins. Shaquille Hines from the Dinos tried his best to rally and keep the Dolphins at bay by posting a monster double-double of his own with 19 points and 18 rebounds - but his effort wasn’t enough as the Diamond Dolphins started pulling away during the second quarter. It was the same theme from that point on as the team from Japan held on to the lead throughout the game with a final score 84 to 72. Quarter Scores: 13-13, 26-34, 50-68, 72-84

The Fubon Braves and the Seoul Samsung Thunders started their Terrific 12 campaigns with a very competitive game as both teams take another shot at an Asia League championshiop. It was a good exchange of action with a total of 11 lead changes and the game came down to the wire. The Thunders had played a good all-around game with contributions across the board - Glenn Cosey led the scoring with 28 points on an efficient 65% shooting from the field. Shaquille Keith led the Braves scoring 23 points on a very efficient effort as well making 9 of his 11 attempts from the field. The Braves were up 4, 82-78 with a little over a minute remaining in the game, but the Thunders climbed their way back into the game with 2 consecutive baskets from Cosey to tie it up at 82 a piece with 44 ticks remaining on the clock. Benoit Mbala (23 points, 9 rebounds) proved to be the difference maker as Cosey found him all alone under the basket and scored the game winning basket as time expired. The Thunders came out with a narrow victory over the Braves 84 to 82. Quarter Scores, Braves-Thunders: 18-27, 39-36, 56-58, 82-84.

The past winners of the 2 Asia League tournaments battled head-to-head in a very physical match up at the Studio City Event Center in Macao. The Chiba Jets poured it all out against the Guangzhou Long-Lions (add hyphen in name) who's lineup featured former NBA Champion Marreese Speights for the first time. He put up a double-double with 24 points, 12 boards and 5 makes from the outside in his debut with his new team. The Long-Lions (add hyphen) controlled the game led by their starting guard and court general- Kyle Fogg. Fogg scored 37 points and his +/- ratio was a team-high +18 while on the court. Michael Parker put up a valiant effort for the Jets, scoring 26 points and grabbing an impressive 18 rebounds but it wasn’t enough to push his team past Guangzhou. The Guangzhou Long-Lions finished on top with a score of 92 to 83 against the Chiba Jets. Quarter Scores, Jets-Long-lions: 18-22, 40-50, 60-72, 83-92.

The iECO Green Warriors went against the Ryukyu Golden Kings to close out Day 1 of The Terrific 12. This was a game that rained down points from long distance – with the Golden Kings connecting on 15 long bombs and the Green Warriors hitting 10 of their own from beyond the arc. The Golden Kings started the game with a 17-0 run as the Green Warriors couldn’t buy a bucket up until the first by Kristoffer Porter with 2 minutes and 50 seconds left in the first quarter. They also lost Richard Howell, whom they consider as the heart and soul of the team to a knee and ankle injury 3 minutes into the game. The Japanese squad dominated with an all-around effort getting contributions across the board with 5 players scoring in double digits – led by Naoki Tashiro with 17 points and import, Jeff Ayres putting up a double-double with 12 points and 14 boards. They were just too much for the Green Warriors and went on to a comfortable win with a final score of 103-75. Quarter Scores, Golden Warriors-Golden Kings: 5-23, 24-56, 52-85, 75-103.
